Abstract:Correctly configuring a firewall is a complex task and prone to  
human error. As a result there are many tools to aid in the creation and  
analysis of firewall rulesets. However, none of the existing tools  
specifically focus on the BSD PF firewall.
We present a formal semantics for the filtering behavior of BSD PF, along  
with semantics preserving transformations on PF rulesets. Ultimately we  
translate a BSD PF ruleset into a semantically equivalent Linux iptables  
ruleset, targeting a formalized representation, which allows further  
analysis. All transformations are verified using the Isabelle theorem  
prover.
