Title: Manipulating Sums and Related Operators in Isabelle/HOL

Abstract: When using Isabelle/HOL’s simplifier, seemingly trivial rules  
need to be made explicit. We analyze this phenomenon on the usage of rules  
related to sums and products. Based on this analysis, we implement and  
evaluate two simple approaches to enable using more rules implicitly. We  
conclude that more sophisticated approaches are required on top of our work  
to be truly useful. Additionally, we implemented a new method for proving  
reindex operations – think index-shifts – on products and sums. Building  
specialized proof methods is a trade-off between ease of development and  
general applicability. Many new specialized methods do not solve the  
initial problem but can be a valuable tool nonetheless.
